NORTON CST “Comfort and Silence Tape” is an elastomeric, flexible foam noise control tape for residential and commercial construction. NORTON CST Joist Tape is designed and patented to reduce or eliminate squeaky floors and impact sound transmission, while providing excellent thermal insulating and thermal break.
Features: Norton CST Tape is a sound deadening gasket not a glue or bonding tape. It has no open time limit or cure time like liquid adhesives. Norton CST Tape has adhesive on one side and durable film on the other. The adhesive bonds to wood or steel. The standard thickness of the Norton CST Tape is 1/8″. It is a foam tape that will not squeeze out of joint. Norton CST Tape can be pre-applied directly to joists or studs. There is an application tool called the HA15 that can greatly increase production time. Norton CST Tape pre-cut widths fit any joist or stud. It has a durable, wear-resistant, low-friction layer on top. Norton CST Tape closed cell foam does not mold or mildew. There is over 15 years of proven history in the field
Benefits: Norton CST Tape provides an effective barrier to squeaks between subfloors and joists. It virtually eliminates costly call backs from squeaky subfloors. Norton CST Tape creates a quieter, more comfortable home. It greatly reduces impact sound transmission (IIC) from upper rooms. Norton CST Tape saves time and labor can be easily and safely pre-applied on the ground, all at one time. It works with wood or steel joist and stud construction
NORTON CST for Squeaky Floors
NORTON CST was developed as a solution to one of the ongoing problems in residential housing- squeaky floors. These are the spots in your floor you step on that emit an annoying squeak. Home builders must deal with customer complaints and job callbacks to fix the squeaks. This is a difficult and expensive problem to solve after the fact, and not always successful. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimates the average callback costs the builder over $350.00 per call.
NORTON CST offers an easy-to-use solution to subfloor squeaks. The squeak is often caused by gaps between the subfloor and the joist; construction adhesives, by their liquid nature, get squeezed down to a very thin film between the joist and subfloor sheathing. They are not capable of consistently accommodating the gap and movement.
NORTON CST for Impact Sound Transmission
If you live in an apartment or condo that was not designed for sound attenuation, then you know how annoying it is when you can hear your upstairs neighbor walking around, when their stereo speakers are blaring, or when something drops on the floor. Simply stated, that’s impact sound transmission. Even when the cavity between the floor and ceiling is insulated, one of the transmission spots is over the floor joist. This is a direct path between the floor and the ceiling.
NORTON CST for Thermal Insulating and Thermal Break Tape
Ghosting lines or tracking on the interior walls of your home are unsightly and, more importantly, point to a temperature difference in your wall that can be costing you money. Small particles- from cooking, heating systems, candles and everyday living, float around in our air. At higher temperatures they tend to stay more in motion. But when the particles encounter a colder surface, say, where a 2×4 stud is behind your gypsum drywall, the particles tend to stick and collect. This, over time, leads to lines and unsightly stains on your wall at the studs and ceiling joists. By thermally protecting the stud with NORTON CST, you even out the temperature on the surface and save some energy, too! NORTON CST also improves the acoustical performance of the wall.
NORTON CST- More Details on Tape Application
NORTON CST Comfort and Silence Tape offers a unique, patented approach to solving some of the sound and thermal problems in your home, making your living space comfortable. Your builder can apply NORTON CST foam tape to all the floor joists ahead of time and on the ground, where it is safe and cost effective. The tape applies easily from a roll directly onto the top of the joist, whether it is engineered, dimensional lumber or steel. Our handy HA15 applicating tool provides fast and accurate application and is built rugged for job site conditions.
NORTON CST is not an adhesive. Unlike traditional construction adhesives, it does not have an open time. It is a 1/8 thick foam tape gasket that fills the void between the subfloor sheathing and joist, with a low-friction coating on the top. Even as the building settles and shifts over time, NORTON CST will still be there to stop the squeaking.
